Gunners miss out on big name trio.

Arsenal lodged three sensational last minute bids on transfer deadline day for Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, Aston Villa goal machine Christian Benteke and Paris Saint Germain midfielder Javier Pastore, according to the Daily Star.

The Gunners managed to bring in Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil for a club record £42.5m on Monday, but saw three equally high profile bids fall by the wayside at the 11th hour.

But Wenger had hoped to make a number of additions to go alongside the German international and targeted two of the Premier League’s most dangerous strikers.

Starsport understands Arsenal went after Benteke with a firm bid, despite the big striker signing a new contract at Aston Villa. The offers were promptly rejected by Paul Lambert’s men, who almost lost the Belgian international to Spurs earlier on in the transfer window.

Wenger had also been a long time admirer of United striker Rooney, and had been linked with a move for him before becoming embroiled in the Luis Suarez transfer saga at the beginning of August. Reports suggest that the manager went in for the 27-year-old late on Monday night but received no answer to his enquiry.

A move for Pastore was also rejected, but the north London outfit were comforted by their big-money capture of Ozil.
