Everton manager Roberto Martinez is excited about what loan signing Romelu Lukaku can bring to his side this season, according to the Daily Star.

The former Wigan boss identified the need for a top quality addition upfront after two consecutive 0-0 draws in the Premier League, saying he felt his side played well but lacked a player to put the ball into the back of the net and take opportunities.

Lukaku spent last season out on loan as well, moving from Chelsea to West Brom, where he enjoyed a great run of form, scoring 17 times for Steve Clarke’s side and making himself a handful for defenders up and down the country.

It was thought that the 20-year-old might then have put himself in the first-team plans of Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, though he was allowed to leave the club again for another loan spell on transfer deadline day.

It looked like West Brom would re-sign him on loan for another season, before a late change of heart saw the Belgian decide on a move to Goodison Park, much to the joy of Martinez, who believes he is exactly the kind of player his side have needed.

“I think it’s fair to say that our opening three performances in the league have been really, really good, but all they have been lacking is that goal, the ball hitting the back of the net,” the Toffees boss said.

“The fans realise that and when you see a player arrive who is capable of doing that it excites you.

“He could be that little piece which completes the puzzle.”
