Reading manager Nigel Adkins has confirmed that the club have ended their interest in signing free agent midfielder Mohamed Sissoko, Sky Sports reports.

The Royals were linked with a move for the former Liverpool and Juventus midfielder after he agreed to mutually terminate his contract with French giants Paris Saint Germain over the summer.

Adkins made his interest in the 28-year-old known quickly, and negotiations were believed to be at an advanced stage with contract talks and a medical being held.

However, no agreement was reached and discussions have now been brought to a close.

Adkins said in the Reading Post: “That’s not going to happen.”

And though he was forced to admit defeat in his pursuit of the Senegal international, Adkins refused to rule out a return to the loan market in the search for added quality, with a striker believed to be high on their list of priorities.

“If something materialises that we believe can benefit and enhance the group then we’ll be very active,” Adkins added.

“But at the moment we’re working hard with the group we’ve got and our focus is on the next game, which is against Leeds United.”
