Everton are understood to already be planning for life at Goodison Park without coveted defender Leighton Baines, according to reports in the Sunday Express.

The Merseyside giants are believed to be bracing themselves at present for the arrival of a new and improved offer for Baines from Premier League champions Manchester United, with new Red Devils head coach David Moyes having been keeping close tabs on his former player ever since the Scot left the Toffees to move to Old Trafford last July.

And, despite failing with two bids for the 28-year-old before the summer transfer window finally closed for business on Sept 2, the Scot is still expected to return with an offer of £15 million for Baines come the turn of the year, with his employers believed to be willing to accept such a fee on this occasion.

However, recently appointed Everton manager Roberto Martinez has already drawn up a short list of replacements for his highly rated left back, with the names of both Swansea City’s Ben Davies and Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand thought to be interesting the Spaniard the most.

Of the impressive duo, though, Everton would stand more chance of landing the Swans full back than the Blues’ star.
