The Uefa Europa League holders have been scouring the market on the Continent of late in the search of a new left back after doubts began to grow about the future of England international Ashley Cole at Stamford Bridge.

Cole, 33, has endured an up-and-down campaign in west London so far this season, with a rib injury that the player picked up in a Premier League contest at Tottenham Hotspur having troubled the full back ever since, so much so that head coach Jose Mourinho has even been forced to utilise right-back Cesar Azpilicueta in his position of late.

And with Cole’s recent new one-year contract with the Blues set to run out at the end of this season, the self-styled ‘Special One’ wants to find a long-term replacement for the veteran, with the Portuguese said to be keen on his compatriot at the Santiago Bernabeu, someone he knows well from their time working together in the Spanish capital.
