Wenger has been hoping to sort new deals out for both players after growing interest from clubs across Europe has threatened to unnerve the two of them.

Full-back Sagna sees his current deal expire at the end of the season and is wanted by Paris Saint Germain and Monaco in his native France, as well as Inter Milan and Roma in Italy. Mertesacker also has his fair share of admirers with Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid both keeping an eye on him.

However, Wenger has sought to put an end to the speculation by confirming that the two players are set to sign new deals to keep them at the Emirates.

“We hope to announce something soon with them,” he said in his press conference.

It has been said that they will both sign two year extensions onto their current contracts, but both are set to net healthy pay rises in the process. Both players have been instrumental in keeping the Gunners at the top of the table this season and Wenger wants to keep the unity that currently exits within the squad together for as long as possible.
