The 24-year-old, who returned to St James’ from a loan spell at Blackpool in January, could now face a ban similar to the one handed to Tottenham’s Andros Townsend over the summer.

The England international received a four month ban from all football, with all but one month suspended, after admitting to betting on a number of games that he was not involved in.

Newcastle said Gosling, who broke rule E8(b) for misconduct in relation to betting, had requested a personal hearing, the date of which will be set in due course.
