The Reds have struggled to fill the role with any form of consistency this season as regular first choice Jose Enrique has been hit by a series of serious injuries, and on loan star Aly Cissokho has failed to live up to the expectations placed on him by the fans and the management.

Brendan Rodgers had hoped to make the position his number one priority during the January transfer window, but was unable to find a suitable replacement and was therefore forced to put his search on ice until the end of the campaign.

And reports in Spain are now suggesting that the former Sevilla man is the ideal candidate and is subsequently being lined up by Rodgers for a summer swoop.

Barcelona are believed to be looking for around £6m for the 29-year-old and are more than willing to sell after he fell behind Jordi Alba in the pecking order at the club.
