The 23-year-old Germany international has just over 12 months remaining on his current contract and had been heavily linked with both United and Real Madrid.

The stylish playmaker is currently sidelined with injury and Irfan Gundogan claims his son’s main focus is returning to fitness and securing a place in Germany’s World Cup squad.

But Watze and Dortmund want Gundogan to commit his future to the club ahead of this summer’s tournament in Brazil.

“Ilkay Gundogan is an important player of our squad (who) we want to keep at our club,” Watzke is quoted as saying by the Mirror.

“We have submitted a contract offer to Ilkay Gundogan and we are expecting to hear from him about it.

“We are certainly not going to need to wait until the summer to see him reply.”
