The 26 year old battler has had a decent campaign, though less effective than his first season at Upton Park, and could be keen on a move to Goodison Park.

The Senegalese international can be picked up for just £3.5m, the fee it takes to trigger his release clause, and Martinez sees Diame as the man to replace Gareth Barry.

Martinez doesn’t appear to believe he can persuade the Man City man to join Everton on a permanent basis, with the England man’s wage expectations said to be above and beyond what the Merseyside club can afford to fork out.

The Everton man will attempt to secure a deal to retain the services of fellow loanees Romelu Lukaku and Gerard Deulofeu though he may struggle to secure either.

Chelsea may want to cash-in on Lukaku and will ask for a fee that would certainly require Everton to smash their transfer recored whilst Barcelona may feel the time is right to usher Deulofeu into their first team squad.
