The English sides had previously been favourites to land the Colombian international, but Rafa Benitez now appears to have won the race by offering to quadruple Martinez’s salary to £1.75m-a-season.

However, the two clubs are still said to be trying to negotiate a fee for the player as Porto want Napoli to meet the players £35m release clause, while the San Paolo outfit are only willing to go as high as £30m.

The 27-year-old is set to feature at this summer’s World Cup with Colombia, and Porto are thought to be reluctant to let him go before the the tournament kicks off, for fear of missing out on an increased fee should he have a strong showing.

Martinez has bagged himself 19 league goals in the Portuguese top flight so far this season and has been tipped to be one of the stars of the World Cup.
