The United board are apparently willing to take the hit on the huge £27m fee they shelled out for him under David Moyes, who was his first major signing after taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Sadly, the move hasn’t worked out, and injuries and a shocking loss of form have all contributed to his recent downfall from his place as one of the most effective midfielders in the Premier League.

Furthermore, incoming manager Louis Van Gaal is not thought to be a fan of the player and has apparently already deemed him as surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

His impressive goalscoring record for the Toffees also deserted him, as he failed to score in his 16 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils.

A number of sides are believed to be interested in acquiring his services this summer, with former club Everton still big admirers.

But a return to Merseyside may not be so easy to come by as Toffees chief Roberto Martinez recently claimed that the Belgian may not even get in his starting XI now.
