The Gunners have ben long time admirers of the Welsh international and have kept him on their radar ever since last summer when they were first linked with making a move for him.

The Swans managed to fend off the interest having just enjoyed their most successful season ever and earning themselves a spot in the Europa League, but just 12 months on Williams has opted to turn down the side’s offer of a new contract and has asked to be allowed to leave the club instead.

The news has obviously interested Arsene Wenger, who is on the look out for fresh recruits in every position, and will shore up his enquiries from last year with a firm £3m bid in the coming weeks.

Williams has a year left on his Swansea contract but he has told the club he will walk away for free 12 months’ time if he does not get a transfer away now.
