Chelsea are hoping to hijack Manchester City’s deal for ace Roma centre-back Mehdi Benatia by offering £18m plus Romelu Lukaku for his services, reports the Daily Express.

27-year old Benatia has become a hot property in the transfer market of late with the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea all very keen to land him. He scored six goals in Serie A this term, establishing himself as one of the best defenders in Italy.

The former Udinese man has been very consistent for Roma since joining them last summer, and is now rated at above £30m by the Italian side. Roma do not want to part with their centre-back, and only a monumental offer is likely to persuade them into selling their ace defender.

Chelsea’s move to offer Lukaku plus cash could be an attractive one for the Italians though as they are keen to bolster their attack and could also sign up another effective defender with cash being offered.

It will be interesting to see how Man City will respond to this intervention from Chelsea though as they too are desperate to add to their defensive ranks.
