Clubs to battle it out for Dortmund star.
Premier League giants Manchester United are set to face a battle with Spanish big guns Barcelona for the signature of Borussia Dortmund’s highly sought-after centre-back Mats Hummels this summer, according to the Daily Express.
The Red Devils are in desperate need for some new defensive cover after losing both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at the end of last season, and new coach Louis Van Gaal has reportedly targeted the Germany international as the ideal man to fill the gaps left by the veteran pair.
Reports last week claimed that United are ready to offer Jurgen Klopp’s side a take-it-or-leave-it offer of £20m, but it is believed that the Red Devils will continue to monitor the situation should their bid fail.
However, United will be aware that they are not the only side interested in the player as reports in Spain are now suggesting that Barcelona are preparing a move of their own.
New coach Luis Enrique has already been busy during the transfer window – landing Ivan Rakitic, Claudio Bravo and Marc-Andre ted Stegen – and he is now on the lookout for a heir to influential skipper Carles Puyol, who retired at the end of last season.
The two sides are now said to be ready to battle it out for his signature over the coming weeks.
