West Ham United have held talks with former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o over a possible transfer this summer, according to the Times.

The veteran centre-forward, who spent one season last year at Stamford Bridge, is being eyed as cover for the injured Andy Carroll by Hammers boss Sam Allardyce, who is under pressure to bring in quality signings this summer.

Eto’o performed well in his brief stint with Chelsea, but is more well known for his time with Barcelona and Inter Milan earlier in his career, when he became widely regarded as one of the best strikers in the world.

Now a free agent, he could be a useful signing for West Ham, though recent rumours suggest they will face competition from the likes of Arsenal and AS Roma for his signature this summer.

The Hammers are also said to be considering a bid for Besiktas striker Hugo Almeida, 30, as they look for extra attacking options to help replace the influence of star player Carroll, who has had a frustrating, injury-hit time since he made the move to Upton Park from Liverpool.

Allardyce is also known to be under pressure to get his side playing more attractive football this season.
