Louis van Gaal had looked to be set to bring in the 26 year old Argentine for a fee of £60m but Spanish giants Real Madrid have upped their valuation and as such may force the Old Trafford side to give up their chase.

The Bernabeu side may well be trying their luck with this price-tag as one imagines president Florentino Perez is keen to balance the books after investing close to £100m on new signings this summer, and having spent huge sums last year, but such a demand could well scare off potential suitors.

There is no doubting the talent Angel di Maria possesses, the former Benfica man finished last season as Real Madrid’s leading assist maker, but £75m would make the World Cup star one of the most expensive players in footballing history.

Di Maria may struggle to retain a foothold in the Real Madrid starting eleven following the acquisition of Colombian attacker James Rodriguez and has been left out of Ancelotti’s starting eleven in both UEFA Super Cup and Spanish Super Cup ties this season.
