Arsenal Step Up Chase For Real Madrid Defender As Transfer Window Nears Its Close

The Gunners are set to battle AC Milan for former Liverpool fullback…

Arsenal and AC Milan could go head to head in the battle to sign Real Madrid’s World Cup winning right-back Alvaro Arbeloa, reports Spanish daily El Confidencial.

After Real Madrid offloaded Xabi Alonso to Bayern Munich, it appears that Carlo Ancelotti is prepared to get rid of another player signed from Liverpool in the summer of 2009.

Arbeloa has struggled for regular game time over the past 12 months, due to the rise of young right-back Dani Carvajal in the position.

According to the report, both Italian side AC Milan and Premier League giants Arsenal want to offer Arbeloa a way out of the Bernabeu before the transfer window slams shut in three days’ time.

The link to Arsenal seems a little strange, considering the fact they’ve already signed two players who favour the right-back position this summer. Mathieu Debuchy cost £12m from Newcastle and looks set to be first choice, while young Englishman Calum Chambers cost £16m from Southampton and can act as cover at the right or centre of defence.

A transfer to AC Milan could seem more likely, as links between the two are still fresh this summer after Diego Lopez finalised a move to the Italians earlier in August.
