Louis van Gaal may regret stating that Welbeck was allowed to leave for not having a good enough goal scoring record.

Louis van Gaal’s statement that Danny Welbeck was sold due to him not having the same goalscoring record as Robin van Persie or Wayne Rooney seems fair initially, but will these stats have the Dutchman eating his words?

There is no doubt that over the last few seasons Welbeck has not shipped the same numbers as van Persie or Rooney, but look at what happens when we compare the new Arsenal singing to van Persie when he was 23-years-old…

Welbeck – Club Goals 37 – International Goals 10.
Van Persie – Club Goals 41 – International Goals 2.

Looking at these stats, the Englishman fares just as well, if not better than the Dutch forward. With both players starting their careers being deployed out on the wings more often than not, Welbeck is sure to become more prolific once he moves inside; much in the same way van Persie did for Arsenal.
