Juventus director general Beppe Marotta said that the South American was near to signing for the Old Lady before United’s offer blew them out of the water financially. The 28-year-old went on loan to Manchester United in the summer for an initial £6 million and the Red Devils have an option to keep him permanently at the end of the season.

Marotta told Rai TV that, “We were really close to getting Falcao. We followed him and there was contact. The player’s preference was to move to Italy but then Manchester United emerged with their spending power and the move failed.”

Falcao missed the World Cup through injury and picked up another knock that ruled him out of United’s recent match against Chelsea, but should be back to play rivals Manchester City next weekend. This will be a boost for manager van Gaal, alongside the return of captain Wayne Rooney.
