Manchester City Star Yaya Toure Slams ‘Appalling’ Racist Abuse Following His Return to Twitter

The midfield playmaker was subject to disgusting abuse within hours of returning to the social media platform.
Yaya Toure’s return to Twitter after a five month absence has proved to be a
total disaster.

Within hours of the midfielder’s return, he had already received copious abuse, some of a racist nature.

“For me it’s a disgrace to be honest,” Toure told BBC Sport. “We need to do something to try to tell people those kinds of behaviour have to stop.”

Anti-discriminaton group Kick It Out said it received complaints about two tweets of a “racist nature” on Monday, and had informed the police.

Toure was subject to racist abuse from CSKA fans in last years Champions League group game; an incident which lead to fans being banned from CSKA’s home group games this year.

Toure tweeted to announce his return to Twitter, and the replies were a mixture of welcomes and abuse. Some of the most extreme abuse has since been removed, and the offending accounts deleted. The Manchester City midfielder posted this tweet later on Monday as a response:

Many of the replies to the Ivorian’s initial tweet contained references to the “birthday cake” affair earlier this year. That farcical situation revolved around tweets allegedly sent by Toure’s agent, implying that Manchester City were not giving his player enough respect. The midfield star later dismissed the whole affair as a joke, but fans have clearly not forgotten the incident.

Toure has enjoyed a mixed start to the season on the field. City have been indifferent and dropped points on several occasions; but it was Toure’s defence splitting pass that set up City’s winner against Manchester United, and he showed signs of returning to his best in last weekend’s feisty derby game.
