Barcelona STAR admits Arsenal approach

Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure seems to be in the transfer news these days. The highly-rated Ivory Coast international midfielder is reportedly being chased by several European clubs – and it has now been revealed that Arsenal wanted to take him on board in the summer.

Toure has let the cat out of the bag by revealing that the Gunners did indeed come knocking on his door. He has admitted that his elder brother Kolo, who is an influential figure at the Emirates, tried to persuade him to leave the Camp Nou for north London at the start of the season – but he resisted.

Yaya said: “Both Arsene Wenger and my brother told me in the summer that I should join Arsenal, but I told them that I am very happy at Barcelona.”

Yaya was signed by Barcelona last summer and went on to become one of the few consistent players for Barca last season. It is indeed good for the club that he decided to stay on in Catalonia.

As for Arsenal, their search for a true world-class and established midfielder continues…

Arsenal To Swap £20m Winger With Toure Jnr?

by jakepjohnson on June 12th, 2008 236 words | 13 comments
  • Digg

With Alexander Hleb looking more and more likely to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer, Arsenal are looking to benefit from any transfer deal as much as possible.

Spanish giants Barcelona are reported to have agreed a deal in principal with the Belarusian himself, with only the fee to be sorted between the Catalans and Arsenal. An offer of £20million is suposedly on the table, but Wenger and Co are looking for a deal including Ivorian Yaya Toure, brother of Gunners defender Kolo.

Arsenal are looking for a holding midfielder as a replacement for Mathieu Flamini, and see Toure as the perfect player for the job. They are also reluctant to let Hleb leave without another midfielder coming in, in an attempt to maintain some squad balance.

However, with a successful debut season in La Liga since his switch from AS Monaco and a place in the fan’s hearts, Yaya’s chances of linking up with his brother seem slim. Barca sporting director Txiki Beguiristain said:

“Nothing has been decided as yet, but we want Yaya to stay with us and he is not on the market.

[New Barca manager, Josep] Guardiola considers him to be an important player in his new project.”

With that in mind, it looks unlikely that Yaya will be the makeweight, but with such a turbulent season behind them at Camp Nou, the player may indicate his requirement for some stability and engineer his way to North London.

Yaya Toure wants to team up with Arsenal’s big brother

by stresster on May 14th, 2008 234 words | 30 comments
  • Digg

It’s not been a great fortnight for Arsenal fans, aside from victories against Derby and Sunderland to finish the season with a swagger. Mathieu Flamini has packed his bags for Milan before the season had ended, while Alexander Hleb’s agent has hinted that the winger has no future at Arsenal. However, the Gunners could be about to keep it in the family, according to Sky Sports, who report that Yaya Toure has spoken of his desire to team up with Kolo in the not too distant future. Could the Barcelona midfielder be on his way to the Emirates?

“I am aware of the interest from the Premier League,” he told skysports.com.

“But I can’t say anything yet – however it would be great to play in a big team with my brother, it would be fantastic but you never know.”

We’re sure Arsenal fans might also applaud a signing such as this one, with Toure the younger being an ever-present for Barca this season and a perfect replacement for Flamini. It largely comes down to the plans of new coach Pep Guardiola, who is taking the reins from Frank Rijkaard in the summer and will be sure to make several changes after a dreadful season for the Catalan giants. If Yaya Toure is capable of making the same impact as his older brother at Arsenal, he’ll be a signing worth having.
