The Red Devils may have shown great resolve to win 2-1 at Arsenal this weekend with a youthful-looking backline, but new signings in that position remain a priority for the club after some suspect showings in that area of the pitch for much of the season so far.

United spent big during the summer, bringing in high class attacking players such as Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao, but van Gaal now looks set to turn his attention to defence as he eyes two of the most impressive centre-backs in Europe in recent times.

In what would be superb work in the transfer market if he can pull it off, it is claimed that the Dutchman wants to bring the following two players to United this winter:

1) Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

A player who could cost a whopping £47m, according to recent claims by the Daily Mail, Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels could make up one half of United’s new defensive pairing if the club can beat Arsenal to his signature this January.
