Adam Lallana will face Liverpool arch-rivals Manchester United with two broken ribs as he attempts to help ease the pressure on under-fire manager Brendan Rodgers.

The £25 million summer signing fractured two ribs in the Reds’ 3-1 win over Leicester City 10 days ago and was only fit enough for the bench in their crucial Champions League tie against Basel.

Lallana started in last weekend’s drab 0-0 draw against Sunderland at Anfield, but did require a pain injection and eventually made way for Steven Gerrard after 67 minutes.

And the former Southampton man could be even given a starting role as beleaguered boss Brendan Rodgers looks to respond following their disappointing Champions League exit on Tuesday, reports Daily Mirror.

Rodgers is thought to want to freshen up his team with Lazar Markovic in contention for a starting role at United after his cameo mid-week.

Mario Balotelli could also be available – he trained with the squad on Thursday after sitting out the previous six games for the Reds. The Italian will be looking to inspire their forward line which has managed just 11 goals in their last 12 matches.

Liverpool face a crucial trip to Old Trafford before Arsenal visit Anfield the week after in what could be a crucial Christmas period for the side and may define their season.
