Ince is shocked that the Merseyside captain has been allowed to get so far into the final year of his contract, and believes that Rodgers should be trying his best to ensure he signs a new deal.

As a one club man, Gerrard is an icon at Liverpool, and is sure to go down in history as one of the club’s greatest ever players.

Some feel that he is well past his best at 34-years-old, but he is still performing at the top level, and has at times continued to drag his side over the line.

“For me, Stevie G should be the first name on the Liverpool team sheet,” Ince said.

“It is sad his contract situation has been allowed to fester. You shouldn’t give anyone a contract out of sentiment but look at what he’s still doing for the club. He’s only 34 and the team struggled against Sunderland without him.”

Gerrard may wish to play abroad before the end of his career, so Liverpool may find it impossible to convince him to extend. Ince believes that everything they can do they should do however, and that the talismanic midfielder still has a huge role to play at the club for years to come.
