The powerhouse midfielder has seen his Old Trafford career revived this season, and has crowbarred his way into van Gaal’s first team plans despite a poor first season at the club.

Fellaini has proved key to United’s success in recent weeks, but will have to do without him against Aston Villa after it was confirmed that he would miss the trip.

The Dutch manager’s side has been plagued with injuries this season, with a number of key players missing large chunks of the campaign.

The Belgian’s illness is just the latest in a long line of problems the former Barcelona boss has encountered, but he will be thankful that it is not something more serious.

He is likely to return for United’s boxing day clash with Alan Pardew’s Newcastle United at Old Trafford, and will certainly be needed heading into this busy Christmas period.

The former Everton star has played every minute of United’s six-game winning streak, and could prove to be a massive loss as his side look to continue their run.
