Arsenal are pursuing a move for Everton midfielder James McCarthy but could face competition from Manchester United and Inter Milan for his signature, according to the Irish Independent.

The 24-year-old is rated as one of the best in the Premier League at the moment, having shone at Goodison Park since his £13m move from Wigan Athletic last summer.
McCarthy is now valued at around £25m, which may prove too much for Arsenal, though they hope to reach an agreement for the Republic of Ireland international this winter.
United also need improvements in midfield in this transfer window, and may be in a better position to outbid the Gunners, having spent huge amounts on new players in pre-season since Louis van Gaal’s arrival at Old Trafford.
Everton are reluctant to let one of their best players go, but concede that they may have to listen to offers if good enough bids do come in for McCarthy this season.
