The Portuguese was close to signing the midfielder in a sensational deal during his first stint as Blues boss but was unable to finalise a move and Gerrard elected to stay at Anfield.

However, with the Liverpool legend set to leave the club at the end of the season after agreeing a deal with MLS giants LA Galaxy, Mourinho joked he would finally capture the Kop legend on a loan deal from the American franchise.

Mourinho also said he was sorry to see Gerrard leaving the Premier League and when asked by BBC 5 Live if he would try to persuade the 34 year old to stay, Mourinho said: “Or to get him on loan.”

“I’m not happy he leaves. I would love the Premier League to keep always the best players,” said Mourinho, who applauded Gerrard off the field during his side’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool in the Capital One Cup semi-final when he was substituted.

“I think he has more than enough quality to play in the Premier League. In spite [of the fact] he’s my opponent, I feel sorry that he’s leaving.”
