Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus thinks the Bundesliga giants should approach Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho as successor to Pep Guardiola, according to the Daily Star.

Guardiola has been linked with moves to replace Arsene Wenger at the Emirates Stadium, though given the French boss is tied to the north London club until 2017 that doesn’t seem likely in the near future. However, it still possible that the Spaniard could join the Gunners when the 65-year-old’s contract ends.

Matthaus believes that either Jose Mourinho or Carlo Ancelotti would be perfect to take over should the former Barcelona man decide to depart, both have managed big clubs before and would be suitably high-profile appointments.

Germany coach Joachim Low is also seen as a viable option by the club legend.

He told Sport Bild: “Just like Jupp Heynckes and Louis van Gaal before him, Pep Guardiola is an alpha male as well. They are all coaches who had been successful abroad. There is no coach like them available in the Bundesliga.”

He added, “There are only two coaches abroad who fit Bayern’s profile: Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti. These two should be right at the top of Bayern’s shortlist if they are available in the summer of 2016. Joachim Low could also be a good candidate if he leaves the Germany job after Euro 2016.”

If either manager does take over at the Allianz Arena side then they would have a big job on their hands to follow in the 44-year-old’s footsteps. Bayern won the Bundesliga in record time last season and are currently nine points clear at the top of the division this time round.
