The former midfielder, whose only experience of management is his brief spell in charge at White Hart Lane last season, is the only candidate Villa have spoken to since dismissing Lambert earlier this week.

Still, Villa seem to have confidence that Sherwood would be an ideal long-term option for the club as they look to rebuild after an awful run of form this season.

The 46-year-old had a decent record during his time in charge of Spurs, but was replaced by Mauricio Pochettino at the end of last season.
