The deal that takes the 18-year-old prospect to Spain will likely be music to Louis van Gaal’s ears, as it would appear to end speculation linking David de Gea with a summer move to the Bernabeu.
Batalla’s transfer has not yet been completed, but it is expected to be an initial year-long loan, with an option to buy for a high price. The River Plate stopper is very highly rated in Argentina, and is being lined up as a long-term replacement for club legend Iker Casillas.
De Gea – who has been the standout performer in another poor season for his club – was reportedly keen to move back to La Liga, and had stalled on signing a new deal at Old Trafford. And while the move to Madrid may be in doubt, if van Gaal’s side can’t secure Champions League football next season, then the Spaniard could still leave, with plenty of admirers of the 24-year-old across Europe.
