The Red Devils go into the international break five points clear of fifth placed Liverpool after their huge 2-1 win over them at Anfield on Sunday. That result leaves the side only eight points adrift of league leaders Chelsea in a season where Louis van Gaal and his players have had many criticisms laid at their door.

The curly-haired Belgian believes Jose Mourinho’s side will win the title this season, but believes United can be contenders next year.

“I think Chelsea will win it (this year),” he said.

“We need to be there next season to show everyone that we can be champions again.

“To do that we must work hard and to improve too.”

Instead of getting ahead of themselves though, Fellaini insists the Old Trafford side’s main aim is to end their year long absence from the Champions League, though they face a difficult end of season run-in.

Manchester United still have matches against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal all to come before the season’s close, but the win against their bitter rivals Liverpool seems to have inspired confidence in the side.

Fellaini said, “It’s massive because this season we didn’t play the Champions League. So, for a team like Manchester United, we need to make sure we qualify for next season.”

The former Everton man has had somewhat of a personal revival after his £27.5 million move didn’t get off to the best of starts under David moyes last season. He has featured much more regularly for the side, scoring five goals, and seems to have found an effective role in the side.
