The skilful winger had been played in by Brentford’s Alex Pritchard, who made a great run from the left-hand side into the centre of the pitch. The Tottenham loanee then slid the ball to the unmarked Redmond, who – assisted by a deflection – tucked the ball into the far corner to make it 2-2 with just over ten minutes to go.

Germany had twice taken the lead in Middlesbrough, thanks to Kaiserslautern frontman Philipp Hofmann. The 22-year-old’s goals came early on in both halves, the first of which was one of real quality. He received the ball with his back to goal, before smashing home his effort from the edge of the area.

But England had replied to the opener through Jesse Lingard, who scored five minutes before the break with a placed effort into Barcelona keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s bottom corner.
