Manchester United boss demands big performance against Chelsea

Louis van Gaal has warned Chelsea that his Manchester United side are still yet to produce their best form, despite winning their last six Premier League games – including wins over Tottenham, Liverpool, and neighbours Manchester City.

Their fine run of form has elevated them into Premier League title contention, albeit with a very slight chance of taking the crown. They currently trail Chelsea by eight points, while the Blues also have a game in hand.

However, they could make a significant statement with a win at Stamford Bridge this weekend, with Jose Mourinho’s side also yet to face both Arsenal and Liverpool, who are likewise battling it out for one of the top four places.

According to the Daily Express, van Gaal expects Chelsea to play for a draw on Saturday, especially considering their spot at the top of the standings. However, the Dutchman feels that a 90-minute performance from his side can prompt a shock result.

He said: “The title? It is not logical but it is still possible. It is more a case of when and if, and I don’t believe in when and if. I believe in facts. The fact is that we are behind Chelsea.

“But we have to play against them and so do Arsenal, so we can lay pressure on Chelsea’s shoulders. You never know, you’ve seen it in previous Premier League seasons. So I cannot say it is not possible, but it is not logical.

“They play at home but I think that Chelsea will be satisfied with a draw. Of course they will want to beat us and we want to beat them. But the question is how long players can play in the discipline.

“We are progressing and playing more like a team. There is more balance in the team now. I do believe that we can play very well but we haven’t played very well for the full 90 minutes yet. Although we won the [Manchester] derby, the first 15 minutes were not good.”
