The Dutchman had been pictured at Fiumicino Airport in Rome on Saturday, sending the transfer wheels spinning across the continent.

However, Lotito has replied to such suggestions in anger, blaming agent Vincenzo Morabito for spreading the stories linking the 31-year-old to the Stadio Olimpico.

He said: “Van Persie? Haven’t you figured this out yet? It’s all rubbish! Total bull! (Agent Vincenzo) Morabito is the one trying to spread these rumours.”

With such an outspoken response from the Le Aquile hierarchy it would seem that United will be stuck with striker for a little longer still. Roma are also not believed to be considering the ex-Feyenoord ace, meaning he is unlikely to be in Rome for transfer-related reasons.

With only ten goals in 29 appearances for the Red Devils this season, the former Arsenal man has been held back by injuries and poor form. However, with captain Wayne Rooney the only other natural centre-forward at Old Trafford currently, it might be a mistake by manager Louis van Gaal to let van Persie go.
