Manchester City are described as ‘poised’ to sign Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba in a £71m deal, with main transfer rivals Barcelona unable to match that fee, according to the Daily Mirror.

The French international is one of the most in-demand players in world football at the moment, establishing himself as a world class talent of the future with some immense displays in Serie A.

Pogba’s fine form since joining Juventus from Manchester United on a free now seems set to earn him a big-money move away this summer, with the Mirror now suggesting City are the favourites to snap him up and bring him back to the Premier League.

This would no doubt go down as one of the most exciting signings of the summer if it goes through, and it is suggested that City’s financial power will see them move ahead of Barca in the queue for his signature.

The Mirror claims the Catalan giants can only afford to pay £57m for the 22-year-old, meaning City will far out-bid that if they do pay the reported fee of £71m, which will also be a British transfer record after Angel Di Maria’s reported £59.7m move to Old Trafford last summer, as reported at the time by BBC Sport.

City’s lack of quality in midfield last season means this move makes sense for Manuel Pellegrini, who will no doubt have been disappointed by the likes of Fernandinho and Fernando, while even star player Yaya Toure suffered a dip in form in comparison to his usual high standards.

With many of City’s squad now ageing and possibly past its peak, the arrival of a player with his best years ahead of him is very exciting news for fans at the Etihad Stadium.
