Manchester United want to hijack Asmir Begovic‘s propsed move from Stoke City to Chelsea this summer as Louis van Gaal eyes the goalkeeper as a possible replacement for David de Gea, according to the Daily Mail.

The Mail claims that United are set to move for a new shot-stopper if De Gea does leave for Real Madrid (though the move may have stalled due to disagreements over an asking price, according to the Guardian), despite the presence of former Barcelona star Victor Valdes at the club already.

Begovic has long been one of the finest goalkeepers in the Premier League, showing the ability to be a match-winner with some big-game performances and eye-catching saves for the Potters.

The Daily Telegraph believe that Chelsea could complete an £8m deal to sign the Bosnian international this week, with Jose Mourinho understandably keen to bring in a replacement backup ‘keeper after Petr Cech’s move to Arsenal last week.

Although Thibaut Courtois is the undisputed number one at Stamford Bridge, there would be a crisis for the Blues if they lost the Belgian to injury, with little in the way of senior backup in that position, only the inexperienced youngster Jamal Blackman.

Begovic would be a great buy if Chelsea could pull it off, but it is little surprise to see that United are also interested given their situation with De Gea, and it may be that there could still be a twist in this tale, as the player himself may be more tempted by a move to Old Trafford, where he would surely be more likely to be first choice in goal.
