Gunners lead chase for 12-goal wide-man.

Arsenal are reportedly leading the chase to sign Napoli winger Jose Callejon this summer and are set to open talks over the Spanish international, according to Sport Mediaset.

The 28-year-old has also attracted interest from Liverpool and Sevilla in recent days, according to the Metro, but it seems the player himself would favour the move to the Emirates Stadium.

With Liverpool no longer in the Champions League, it makes sense that Callejon would prefer a transfer to Arsenal, who are playing in Europe’s top club competition once again after finishing third in the Premier League last season.

Napoli’s poor form saw them miss out on a Champions League place last term, and this has also been big names like Gonzalo Higuain linked with an exit, with recent reports in the Guardian saying that Arsenal could also be interested in snapping up the prolific Argentine international, though he would cost £67m.

The Metro claims that Callejon would cost £17.9m, which looks a bargain for an experienced player with a proven record of scoring goals from out wide, having notched up a hugely impressive 32 strikes in the last two seasons.

Arsene Wenger already has many players to choose from in that part of the pitch, with players like Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott impressing in attack last season, but it could be that the Frenchman still wants improvements in that area, with Lukas Podolski leaving the club for Galatasaray in recent weeks and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain proving unreliable due to repeated injury problems in the last couple of seasons.
