Man United nearing fifth summer signing as replacement for Real Madrid-bound star

Manchester United are understood to be close to a deal to bring Sergio Romero to Old Trafford.

According to ESPN [via the Mirror], the Argentina keeper is on his way to join Louis van Gaal’s revolution, and while he may ostensibly be a replacement for Victor Valdes, his arrival could also pave the way for David De Gea to switch to Real Madrid.

Van Gaal has fallen out with ex-Barcelona stopper Valdes [Metro], and has publicly criticised the veteran after his alleged refusal to play with the club’s reserve team, an allegation denied by the player himself [Telegraph].

The Spaniard appears set to end his brief stay in the North West, with Antalyaspor having been understood to be keen on taking him to Turkey [ESPN].

By contrast, LVG would love to keep hold of De Gea, but the keeper—who has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid [Mirror]—looks likely to depart, either this summer or the next. The Merengues’ decision to offload Iker Casillas may see the Spanish giants increase their efforts to bring the 24-year-old to the Bernabeu.

Facing the departure of not one but possibly two guardsmen, United look set to make contingency plans, and appear close to bringing the Argentine No. 1 Romero to Old Trafford.

The 28-year-old, who is currently a free agent after his contract at Sampdoria came to an end, previously featured under the Dutch coach at AZ Alkmaar.

Van Gaal has already brought Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Matteo Darmian to Old Trafford this summer.
