New Manchester United signing set to take no. 7 shirt as £45.9m move nears

Manchester United star Memphis Depay is set to take the  number seven shirt as Angel Di Maria‘s exit nears, reports the Daily Star.

The Argentina international is the subject of a £45.9 million move from PSG, and could be on his way before long. This leaves his shirt number free, and it would be a major show of faith for the new signing to be given it. The jersey has been made famous over the last decade for being worn by David Beckham and then Cristiano Ronaldo.

Depay wore the number for PSV Eindhoven last season. The 21-year-old was the Eredivisie top scorer in the campaign, scoring 22 goals to fire the Dutch side to the title. Louis van Gaal will be hoping the forward can recreate that form at Old Trafford, and perhaps this show of faith will help the youngster’s confidence ahead of the new season.

United are under pressure to perform next season, with heightened expectations in the Premier League as well as the Champions League to contend with. The loss of Di Maria could be a major blow to their hopes after his ten assists last time round, but Depay could be the man to step in to his boots.
