Manchester United star set to sign surprise new contract imminently

Manchester United star David De Gea is set to sign a new contract with the club ‘imminently’, according to El Confidencial [via Metro].

Agent Jorge Mendes has apparently confirmed that the renewal will happen in the near future. With only one year left on his current deal, it could be a major boost for the Red Devils.

This is a major surprise given that the player nearly moved to Real Madrid in the recent transfer window. The move was only scuppered by the necessary paperwork being handed in too late [BBC]. Since then both sides have blamed each other for the failed move [Real Madrid statement & Man Utd statement], which throws in to the doubt whether it will happen in the future.

If the 24-year-old puts pen to paper on a new deal, it makes it even more likely that he will end up staying at Old Trafford. He is close to signing a new deal in order to get more game time before the European Championships next summer. If he doesn’t tie his future to the club, then manager Louis van Gaal may not pick him, putting the Spain international’s place at the tournament in doubt.

In this sense, the Red Devils appear to hold the initiative and could well make life tricky for the 24-year-old stopper should he refuse to commit his future to the club.

If De Gea is going to get back in to the first team, then he will have take Sergio Romero’s place between the sticks. The Argentina international has played in every match so far, but was at fault for the Red Devils during their 2-1 loss to Swansea City. As such, United will surely welcome the man who has been Player of the Season for the last two years straight back in to the side once he has agreed terms on a new deal.
