Manchester United fans want Jesse Lingard dropped for Watford visit

Louis van Gaal has a selection dilemma on his hands ahead of Manchester United’s visit of Watford.

The Red Devils manager is not used to having an abundance of options at his disposal because of the club’s severe injury problems this season, but the Dutchman is spoilt for choice this evening!

Anthony Martial is expected to be fit again after missing United’s last two matches with a hamstring strain – but where does he fit into an attack which has scored eight goals in that pair of games?

Teenage striker Marcus Rashford has burst onto the scene with four goals in two appearances, while Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard have been among United’s best and most consistent performers.

Then there is big-money signing Memphis Depay – who has finally come to the party with a couple of really encouraging displays. So, who would United fans drop for tonight’s clash with the Hornets?

We quizzed our United-supporting Twitter followers to find out, and here were the results:

Interestingly, 42% of those polled would like to see their own academy product Lingard make way for Martial. The 23-year-old winger has scored five goals in 23 appearances for United this term.

Despite his recent heroics, a healthy 30% are behind the idea of dropping Rashford, although this would protect the 18-year-old from the media spotlight, and allow Martial to play through the middle.

Only 11% would consider sacrificing the guile of Juan Mata in the No. 10 role, while 83% of the Old Trafford faithful want to see Depay’s confidence boosted with a chance to continue his recent form.

It will be interesting to see who Van Gaal puts his faith in when the team news comes in!
