The Reds were left heartbroken after their defeat in the final of the Capital One Cup to City on Sunday, with Manuel Pellegrini’s side lifting the trophy after triumphing in a penalty shootout.

In turn, the game began with both sides showing plenty of determination and the odd half-chance as they threatened to find a breakthrough, but it was Lallana who finally bagged the first goal of the game.

The England international found himself in a pocket of space, and sent an ambitious effort goalwards only to see it roll into the back of the net with Joe Hart seemingly too flat-footed.

While the 28-year-old will certainly be disappointed with his inability to stop the shot, he wasn’t given much chance just before half-time as James Milner doubled the lead for the hosts.

It will come as a bitter blow for City if they come away from Anfield empty-handed, as they have slipped 10 points behind league leaders Leicester City although they hold a game in hand over the Foxes.
