Wales held Austria to a 2-2 draw in Vienna but they would have left with all three points had Stoke City striker Marko Arnautovic not scored a brace.
The powerful striker equalised twice for the Austrians to keep the home side in the game and rescue a point.
The draw kept Wales top of the World Cup qualification Group D on goal difference. Serbia, Austria, Ireland and Wales are all on four points while Georgia and Moldova are yet to pick up a point.
