Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt, these days of course featuring as a right-sided midfielder, has come under transfer speculation after admitting that he is a huge fan of the former Tottenham Hotspur manager Martin Jol.
Jol was sacked by Spurs earlier last season and is currently coaching the German Bundesliga giants SV Hamburg. Jol, a Dutchman, had a successful stay with Spurs in England, taking them to fifth-placed finishes in the English Premier League.
Although Kuyt is quite happy at Anfield, it is believed that manager Rafael Benitez’s habit of playing him out of his natural position as a striker is not going down too well with the former Feyenoord hitman. And now that Kuyt had admitted that he would like to work with Jol some time in the future, things might just assume a different hue for Liverpool.
This is what the Dutch international striker said:
“I am happy at Liverpool but Jol’s one of the best Dutch coaches and I’d possibly like to work with him in the future.”
So is Kuyt on his way out of Anfield? Let’s wait and watch.
Wasn’t Rafael van der Vaart being linked to a move to Italian giants Juventus in January? One month fast forward and his suitors have changed. Chelsea are now being touted as the player’s likely destination in the summer.
Not that Chelsea manager Avram Grant would mind a player of Rafael van der Vaart’s class and calibre. The SV Hamburg midfielder is a graduate of the fabled youth academy of Ajax and although he hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations that he flared up in his first few years at the Amsterdam Areana, Van der Vaart is a classy midfielder with some looks too.
Chelea scout Rainer Bonhof was at Hamburg’s match against Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend and kindly dropped us a hint of Chelsea’s interest in the Dutch international:
I can’t say which player I came to watch but when you have a look at the match, you could imagine who was the most interesting.
There you have the rumour mill bursting into action once again.
Juventus might have been overshadowed by the 2006 matchfixing scandal and their squad might not possess the depth and quality of their arch rivals Internazionale but the Old Lady still command the respect and awe of top players.
Just ask Rafael van der Vaart at SV Hamburg. The Dutch international is already one foot on the train that will take him out of Germany and into Italy, precisely to Turin. Juventus manager Claudio Ranieri has consistently expressed interest in the creative midfielder and the club’s board too has backed him. And the player himself has joined in the speculation too.
Van der Vaart has never expressed reluctance to move to a bigger club and feels that Juve provide him the perfect launch pad to fulfil the promise and potential that he is gifted with. In an interview to the German newspaper Bild as picked up by SkySports here, van der Vaart doesn’t eclipse the fact that he would like to leave the AOL Arena for greener pastures and that he is no mood to renew his contract.
He says:
I have two-and-a-half years left on my Hamburg contract. That is long enough. At the same time, it does not mean I am already gone. But my dream of playing in a very big club is great and if I tie myself to Hamburg until 2012 it would be too long for me. There isn’t an official offer. I’ve heard that Juve are interested and I can imagine myself playing there.
Van der Vaart has a contract until 2010 with Hamburg and the German club is trying to extend that till 2012. But the player himself wants to move away and under such circumstances, it is unlikely that Hamburg would be able to force the player int submission. Although there is virtually no chance for Juve to snap up the midfielder in January, the Turin-based club would certainly like to think that they shall get the player in the summer. And Rafael van der Vaart would be worth every single penny that Juve would pay Hamburg. He is really that good.
