Celtic Finally Seal Deal for New Manager: But is he the Right Man for the Job?

by Mad Dog and Glory on June 16th, 2009 1 comment

It took a while but the vacancy has now been filled!

Football - Tottenham Hotspur v West Bromwich Albion Barclays Premier League

Celtic have confirmed Tony Mowbray as their new manager after a deal was concluded with West Brom.
Mowbray arrives from the club relegated from the Premier League in England along with assistant Mark Venus and first-team coach Peter Grant.
Present Celtic coach Neil Lennon will remain as part of the Scottish Premier League club’s management team.
Mowbray, who becomes the 16th manager of Celtic, will speak at a media conference at 1000 BST on Wednesday.
The Glasgow club at the weekend agreed to pay the £2m in compensation demanded by West Brom, with a Celtic source insisting that it would not reduce money available for new players.(BBC Sport)

Right man for the job? Or simply number seven on the club’s wishlist? Tony Mowbray did well to get his West Bromwich Albion side promoted to the Premier League and at least it can be said that his sides do play good football, but would he have been considered as ‘good enough’ for the post if he didn’t have links to the club from his playing career at Parkhead? I am not so sure! For freshness and on current managerial form Roberto Martinez would have been a better bet but at least Tony Adams was not considered! Have Messrs Reid, Lawell and Desmond opted for familiarity over invention?

Ex-Chelsea and West Ham managers favourite for Portsmouth gig: Who should replace Adams?

by stresster on February 9th, 2009 1 comment

Tony Adams has once again failed as a football manager, with the Pompey board calling time on his three-month stint at Fratton Park. Many supporters continued to back the former Arsenal defender, especially after the team came so close to beating Liverpool on Saturday. However, a failure to win since November has made the powers-that-be understandably twitchy. [Read the rest of this entry »]

Is Tony Adams dead man walking at Portsmouth? This story would suggest so

by stresster on February 6th, 2009 4 comments

While the Pompey board have made all the right noises about backing Tony Adams, it’s almost inconceivable that they haven’t considered alternatives to the rookie manager. After all, the team are without a win since November and the former Wycombe gaffer seems clueless how to stop the current run of defeats which is threatening their Premier League status. Has Portsmouth chairman just consigned the team to relegation?

by stresster on February 3rd, 2009 4 comments

After landing the FA Cup under Harry Redknapp last season, the current campaign has been a bit of come-down for Pompey fans. OK, so another piece of silverware might have been too much to expect, although another solid Premier League placing and a decent run in the UEFA Cup would have been the quite reasonable expectation carried by many supporters. Neither have happened as Portsmouth slide down the league at a rate of knots, although there appears to be no managerial change in the offing at the moment. [Read the rest of this entry »]

Is ex-Chelsea manager the right man for the Portsmouth job?

by stresster on February 2nd, 2009 1 comment

Tony Adams has already had an ill-fated managerial reign at Wycombe, and it appears to be a case of history repeating at Fratton Park. After a humiliating exit at the hands of Swansea in the FA Cup, Portsmouth have continued their slide down the Premier League thanks to defeats against Aston Villa and Fulham. Will the board now step in and try and stop the rot with a new face? [Read the rest of this entry »]
