Saints line up raid on Rangers.
Southampton are lining up a summer swoop for Queen’s Park Rangers midfielder Esteban Granero, according to The Mirror.
The classy 25-year-old joined QPR last summer in a £9m deal from Real Madrid and is reported to be one of the club’s highest paid players. However, that has prompted Harry Redknapp to tout him around to other sides as the West London club look to offload a number of their under performing stars this summer.
Granero has managed just 21 appearances this season and has found the net once in what has been a turbulent first season in England but Saints boss, Mauricio Pochettino, is prepared to hand him a Premier League lifeline with Southampton.
The Argentine has been a big fan of Granero since his days managing Espanyol and he feels that now is the right time to make a move to land him.
Granero came through the ranks at Real before being sold to fellow Madrid based side, Getafe. Two impressive seasons there prompted his former club to exercise a buy-back clause in his contract and bring him to the Bernabeau in 2009. A minimal showing for Jose Mourinho’s men last season saw him seeking a new challenge and he joined the big spending hoops on a four-year deal.
With QPR’s relegation almost a certainty now, Redknapp must trim his overgrown wage bill and that singles out Granero.
