Spurs chasing Ecuadorian star.
Tottenham are considering a surprise £9million move for 27-year-old Ecuadorian striker Christian Benitez, according to Sky Sports.
The prolific forward, nicknamed ‘Chucho’, currently plays his football in Mexico with Club America, and his only experience of playing outside South America is a brief loan spell with Birmingham City in 2009/10, which was not a great success as he only scored three Premier League goals.
However, he has shown great form for Club America, scoring 52 goals in the last two seasons, leading Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas to think he could be the answer to the team’s problems upfront.
The club have also been linked with the likes of Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke and Internacional’s Leandro Damiao as Villas-Boas seeks to improve on current strike pairing Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor, who both had poor seasons for the club in front of goal in 2012/13.
Spurs relied on Gareth Bale to score the majority of their goals, and the manager knows there is a need to strengthen to push for a finish in the top four next year, as well as to persuade Bale not to leave the club for Real Madrid this summer.
Benitez is thought to be one option, though they may still be waiting on deals for the likes of Benteke and Damiao before considering other options.
