Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is ready to make Aston Villa striker Darren Bent one of his top summer transfer targets according to The Daily Telegraph.

Villa boss Paul Lambert has told Bent he is free to leave the club this summer after a season where he rarely featured for the Midlands club.

Despite being Villa’s record signing after arriving from Sunderland for £24 million, Bent has failed to regularly appear in the starting eleven this season following the highly impressive debut season of Belgian youngster Christian Benteke.

Bent has publically stated that he intends to play much more regularly next season and with Lambert keen to build a team around Benteke, it seems likely that Bent will be forced into finding new employers.

Bent believes he has an outside chance of making the England squad for next summer’s World Cup finals tournament in Brazil and is keen to secure a move where he will receiving regular action on the pitch.

Newcastle are reportedly at the front of the queue to sign Bent with Magpies boss Alan Pardew knowing Bent well from their time together at Charlton Athletic. It is thought that Bent will be available for a fee under the £9 million mark.
