West Brom could make a surprise move to sign West Ham flop Carlton Cole on a free transfer this summer, according to the Daily Express.

The 29-year-old had been at Upton Park since 2006 after failed spells with Chelsea, Charlton and Aston Villa, but was not kept on as he came to the end of his contract after a disappointing season.

Cole only managed two goals for the Hammers in 2012/13, and manager Sam Allardyce has been keen to bring in new attacking options.

However, West Brom could offer the former England international a lifeline this summer, as they are also in the market for a new striker, following the return of loan star Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea.

The Baggies have also been linked with another free agent, Wigan striker Franco Di Santo, as they look to bring in new players on a limited budget.

Lukaku was an excellent acquisition for the club, but Chelsea have turned down the offer of a loan for a second season, as they look to integrate the Belgian striker into their first team next year.

West Brom have also considered a move for ex-Arsenal striker Jeremie Aliadiere, currently of Lorient.
